Bringing two beagles into our family in February has been a constant learning experience. Where do they sleep? With us. How many walks do they get? Two long walks a day plus as much yard time as they will put up with. What do we need to lock up? Laundry, unless I don't mind finding my underwear in the living room or on the patio, and I do mind. Those answers, among others, come with time and experimentation.
How about what to feed the dogs? Wally and Rilo's original family are great dog owners and told us just what to buy, and exactly how much food to feed the dogs. These are healthy, happy animals and I saw no need to change their diets. Besides, I had always heard that you're in for a heap of trouble if you change your dog's diet.
But while they liked their old food just fine and it’s of good quality, it gave the dogs the WORST breath, among other, shall we say, olfactory offenses. I don’t even like the smell of the food BEFORE it’s eaten. Maybe trying a new food would be a good idea.
And then along came an opportunity to try and review a dog food from Purina. We always fed our dogs Purina dog food when I was growing up, so I had no skepticism about the brand. Which Pro Plan Selects flavor would I like? Um, yeah, I can’t really ask the dogs . . .
- Natural Turkey and Barley Formula? Sounds fine . . .
- Adult 7+ Natural Turkey and Barley Formula? No, the dogs are 3 and 4 . . .
- Natural Beef and Barley Formula? Possibly . . .
- Natural Chicken and Brown Rice Formula? Um, we raise chickens and I’d like to discourage the idea that they’re delicious, so not this one . . .
- Natural Salmon and Brown Rice Formula? BINGO.
I thought this would be a good test since their current food was salmon-based. And I liked the fact that the primary ingredient of this food is SALMON. Hey, I might even try it.
Guess what? They loved it. I tried SO hard to get action shots of the dogs eating but they wouldn’t move their heads out of the way. The whole first feeding took maybe 90 seconds. Nom nom nom indeed.
Best part: the steenky salmon smells that they USED to make, are gone. No really, that’s a huge relief, especially when the dogs are curled up in bed with us. And they have adapted to their new food without any unpleasant incidents. All is well in Fooleryland.
Will I buy Purina Pro Plan Selects dog food for Wally and Rilo going forward? Yes, I think I will. My only hesitation, and it’s not small, is that this is not inexpensive food. But I think it’s an important enough consideration that I’ll budget for it. Plus, I can have the dogs make a few more license plate frames to shore up the cost difference.
And now, wouldn’t you like a treat yourself? Huh? Yeah? Good girl! Oh, wait – sorry, Doggie talk.
